As an owner of two blogs, I understand the importance of making money from your blog.
But the truth is this, a blog is not going to make money on its own right away.
I’ve been blogging for quite a few years now and although some things have changed, one thing hasn’t: until you begin treating your blog like a business, you won’t make the money you want from it.
Your blog is what will take your audience to your money making machine. Whether that is affiliate products, products you created, courses, books, etc.
In order to see a major shift happen for you, you’ve got to treat your blog like what it is.
I started my blog at a time in my life when I needed it. I wanted to just share what I knew with the world. It was really just a hobby for me in the beginning. The same may be true for many of you. Or you may have started a blog for the purpose of creating an income from it.
Blogging changed my life.
I am able to live a life of more freedom, less debt (hoping to be completely out by the end of the year), more time with my children and family, and travel when I want.
If you a new to this and have yet to even start a blog, be sure to learn how to get started here in 3 simple steps!

How to Make Money Blogging
There are many ways you can make money from your blog. Unlike dozens of other posts, I won’t go into details of all the different ways.
Some ways that are popular are:
- Affiliate Marketing
- Other products
- Membership sites
- Coaching/Consulting services
I have two different blogs and I focus on different monetizing methods on each. For example, you won’t find as many display ads here as you do on my second blog. I also utilize affiliate marketing more on that blog as well. I primarily offer my consulting services and my online course here. It’s all about using whatever method works best for you, your niche, and your business.
The Truth About Monetizing
Monetizing your blog can technically begin from day 1 of launch. You can slap up a few display ads, share some affiliate links in your posts and cross your fingers and hope for the best.
Or, you can create the best foundation for your blog and make it a money making beast.
When I work with clients and we discuss monetizing, the number one thing that comes up is TRAFFIC.
How do I get people to my site?
We all share this same desire! Like really, name a blogger that never had this question.
You don’t have to wait until you have mega traffic to start monetizing, but you want to start building your traffic before you do.
There are dozens of ways to grow your blog traffic. A few of the top methods I utilize are:
Traffic and monetizing go hand in hand. But, you can make money from your blog with a small amount of traffic.
You first have to not think of traffic as just traffic. Numbers on a graph. Instead, think of the people.
Each tick on that number line is a living, breathing individual hungry for knowledge and is ready to learn from you. They have questions and are looking to your blog for a solution to their issue.
You also want to focus on getting the right traffic.
You shouldn’t just want any kind of traffic because you want high numbers. I used to have a blog post on this blog that really didn’t tie in with my overall blog topic. But it was bringing in lots of traffic- the wrong traffic. They’d read that one post and leave because nothing else really resonated with their issue. I have since removed that blog post. It wasn’t the right kind of traffic–or people.
You want people who come to your blog and stay awhile because everything you have to offer keeps them there.
So you have to ask yourself, WHO do I want to attract to my blog?
You can then focus on how to reach those people, which is now the HOW.
Build and Nurture Your Community
When you know who you are trying to reach, you can then focus on how to attract them.
One of my favorite things about Facebook groups is being able to understand the needs of my audience. Join groups, not just to promote yourself, but to learn and observe. Ask questions like:
- What blog post topic would make you feel like it was written just for you?
- What is the main thing you have been struggling with as a _____?
Asking questions like these will allow you to gain insight on what the people you are targeting really need and you can begin building your community.
When you create great content, you will attract the right people and they will want more, leading them to want to sign up for your email list. Having irresistible lead magnets and opt-ins will provide them with even more value.
There is money in your list!
These are the people who will learn from you, trust you, and buy from you. Build and nurture this community by consistently engaging with them. Not just when you put up a new blog post but consistently connecting and teaching them something that correlates with their needs.
Your email list is among your greatest assets. You don’t have to worry about any algorithms here! These are your people and you have their attention. Email marketing is one of the best marketing tools.
When someone signs up for your email list, they are letting you know they want more. So give them the solutions they need and they will, in turn, always support you.
Create A Monetizing Strategy
To really make money from your blog (turned business), you must implement a monetizing strategy.
Think about how much money you want to make from your blog this year. Take that number and divide it by 12. That is how much you need to make this month. So how do you plan to do that? That’s where your monetizing strategy comes in.
Your strategy will include what methods you plan to use to reach your blog financial goal. It will also break down how you plan to utilize those methods.
Let’s look at an example:
Monetizing Goal Overall: Increase blog income to $60,000 this year
Monthly Goals: Create an income of $5,000 each month
Methods to focus on this month: Affiliate marketing and ecourse
Strategies to utilize: Pinterest to drive traffic to my blog, lead pages to promote a free email course, and guest posting to drive traffic to lead page
This is a very simple breakdown but it covers the surface level of a strategy. You can learn more about creating your own monetizing strategy in my Monetize Your Blog Guide. I’ve also included more traffic building tips and other advice to help you monetize better!
It is important to map out your methods and strategies to make money from your blog. I am guilty of trying new things all the time and being hit by the “shiny object syndrome”.
Creating your strategy makes it easier for you to stick to your plans and goals.
When you are all over the map, trying one thing after the other without a strategy in place, you are setting yourself up for failure.
To really make money from your blog, get focused, centered, and create a monetizing strategy that you will stick to and rock!
