I am not an affiliate marketing guru by no means. I am simply learning what works for me and sharing the process with others.
Many bloggers I have worked with want to know how to make money with affiliate marketing. When wanting to start a blog, this is usually the first question that follows.
I would love to say, I have always made tons of money from affiliate marketing, but that would not be true.
Before writing the post I will be sharing with you shortly, the most revenue I made from one single post was around $100. I have come across many affiliate marketing courses, books, posts and Facebook groups and I have tried every tip and tool suggested.
Honestly, it was mostly a lot of trial and error and finding what works for me, my audience, and my niche.
Everything that works for everyone else, won’t work for you and vice versus.
I don’t think there is ONE MAIN METHOD for utilizing affiliate marketing. Only that you know your audience and know what aligns with their needs and always provide solutions to their problems.
I had a conversation with a blogging friend of mine, Julie of The Savvy Blogger, and she made me realize just how hard it is to stand out in the blogging community. (By the way, she is a guru, unlike me, when it comes to affiliate marketing.)
I would love to lay out this step by step tutorial on how to craft the perfect blog post in order to generate hundreds of dollars using affiliate marketing. But all I can do is give you an analysis of what worked best for me.
How to Make Money With Affiliate Marketing
Before we dive into the break down of the blog post that made me over $800, let’s chat a tad bit about affiliate marketing.
Affiliate marketing is basically you, the marketer, sharing or promoting products and services that are not your own. You are given a special link to share that is unique to you to make it easy to track your shares, clicks, and sales.
When someone purchases the product or service you promoted via your special link, you are given a commission from that sale.
It is important that you find programs to join that are in alignment with your niche, blog topic, and the needs of your audience. Key things to pay attention to when considering an affiliate program to join are commission structure, payout turnaround time, and how you are able to promote their products or services.
Affiliate marketing, to me, is the best way to make money online as a new blogger or online marketer. You don’t have to create a product of your own right away but can simply promote others’ goodies instead.
Right now, I am working on a book that will launch later this year. Affiliate marketing makes it possible for me to earn an income while I work on that book. I also recently launched an online course. It only launches two times a year. Affiliate marketing allows me to make an income during the times my course is closed and not generating any income.
So whether you are a new or seasoned blogger or entrepreneur, you can utilize affiliate marketing.
I know there is often a struggle for bloggers and entrepreneurs when wanting to know how to make money with affiliate marketing. Trust me, I had no idea it was possible either.
But it is!
It, of course, takes some work to get the swing of things (this is a play on words that you will understand in a moment!). The great thing is, though, that it is possible for anyone to make it happen.
I use affiliate marketing on this blog, but I use it primarily on my other blogs.
For the purpose of this post, I am going to be sharing with you how I made over $800 from a post on my blog, Mom Life Chronicles.
Here is the post: 2017 Best Baby Swings
The keys to this post in generating income for me are three important components: SEO, Pinterest and content.
As a WordPress user, I use the Yoast plugin. It really helps me to achieve better SEO.
When I first started blogging, I had no idea what SEO, keywords or good headlines meant for the growth of your blog, traffic, and income. But like I mentioned earlier, a lot of trial and error had to occur for me to learn!
When crafting the outline for this post, I had to choose my keyoword. Using Jaaxy, a tool that helps you determine which are the best keywords to use, I was able to decide to use my keyword of choice for this post.
When looking at my analytics, you can see that people land on my post using these as their seach options:
After choosing my keyword, I make sure to choose a good headline, URL, and tags that also align with my post topic. I share more SEO tips in my recent post on How to Rank on the First Page of Google: 5 SEO Tips.
I did everything metioned in that post when crafting my baby swings post.
Good SEO doesn’t just help you to rank well with Google but also with Pinterest.
Pinterest is an awesome search engine. I am learning more and more about the power of Pinterest as I put it to use. Pinterest has really helped to gain traffic to this blog post.
When I check my analytics for this pin, I see that I have had 226 click throughs to this post in the last 30 days.
Also, when you search “best baby swings” on Pinterest, my pin is in the top 5 pins.
So what makes a money-making pin?
It lies in the keywords! SEO carries over and it’s important that you highlight keywords at every opportunity that you have.
Not only do I mention in my pin description what the post details are, but I also add some keywords to the end of my post that could lead searchers to my pin.
Getting click-throughs to the post can be much simpler than turning those clicks to purchases. When you use headlines targeted to buyers which also includes good content, you can easily get those affiliate sales!
You can have the best SEO and headline but fall short on the content. Think of your blog post as a sales page when you are promoting as an affiliate.
This particular blog post includes Amazon products, but these tips work for any product you are an affiliate for. Good converting posts focus on the solution to problems and highlight benefits.
Every post you are promoting an affiliate product in doesn’t have to model mine. Just be sure that you are:
- telling a story
- providing value
- highlighting key features
- including cons as well as the pros
- giving your opinion as well
People want to know your thoughts as well. What worked for you, what didn’t, and what they can expect. When providing exceptional value in your content, those readers are more likely to become buyers.
As an Amazon affiliate, you are able to not only make money from the sale of the individual product you are promoting, but also for every product purchased at checkout using your affiliate link. About 30% of my commission comes from products I wasn’t even promoting!
Although this post had only 226 click throughs, it generated $847.53 in commission.
Remember, I am no guru whatsoever. I am just sharing my own experiences to help other succeed and learn from the things I have done.
The best method of learning is doing it yourself.
I’d love to know what methods you already implement that you have found successful in utilizing affiliate marketing. Have you found what works best for you?
