It can be very challenging to find food and choose snacks that your family can eat and aren’t also filled with ingredients that can be harmful to their health. Thankfully, we are now a generation that is now more mindful of what is in our food. Read labels. Things like artificial flavoring, gluten, and high fructose corn syrup are all things that you should stay away from. My oldest was almost borderline addicted to hot Cheetos. But the ingredients in those chips are far from what a child should be eating. You want snacks that are low in fat and high in protein. Steer clear of things like candy, sugary cereals, and sodas. “All natural” isn’t always healthy either. All natural juices can still be filled with lots of sugar. So pay attention to labels.
Shop Clean. Whenever you can, try to find organic, clean foods. I know in some areas like mine, it can be hard to find organic options. And they can also be more expensive. Choosing snacks and foods that are free from potentially harmful ingredients is definitely a plus when considering the well-being of your family.
Prepare your snacks at home. Preparation is vital when trying to live healthier. To prevent getting those salty chips out of the snack machine at work or stopping at the local store to grab that honey bun, prepare healthy snacks at home. You can make trail mix, cut up vegetables, or whole grain crackers with peanut butter (yum!). Having snacks with you will make it easier for you not to indulge in easy access sugary snacks.
Make snacking fun. Pairing snack time with a fun activity can actually help your family make the transition easier! My kiddos enjoy watching Netflix, doing puzzles, and baking. So instead of buttered popcorn during Netflix binges, replace it with a healthier version or will a different healthy snack. Instead of baking those fudge brownies or lemon cake, bake healthy muffins or cookies. Make it a fun activity for everyone.
