How to Choose Healthy Snacks for Your Family

How to Choose Healthy Snacks for Your Family

It can be very challenging to find food and choose snacks that your family can eat and aren’t also filled with ingredients that can be harmful to their health. Thankfully, we are now a generation that is now more mindful of what is in our food. More and more people are transitioning to healthier lifestyles and people are starting to live healthier, fuller lives.

My 6 year old son loves sugary snacks and drinks. I have been trying to transition him to organic-based snacks and putting more water into his daily diet. My 7 year old will eat whatever you put in front of her so there is no issue with me switching out the bad snacks for the healthier options.

Now that I am being more proactive and conscious of what my family eats, I want to provide them with the best options while also making it convenient for me.

So just what can you do to ensure you choose healthy snacks for your family?

How to choose healthy snacks for your family

Read labels. Things like artificial flavoring, gluten, and high fructose corn syrup are all things that you should stay away from. My oldest was almost borderline addicted to hot Cheetos. But the ingredients in those chips are far from what a child should be eating. You want snacks that are low in fat and high in protein. Steer clear of things like candy, sugary cereals, and sodas. “All natural” isn’t always healthy either. All natural juices can still be filled with lots of sugar. So pay attention to labels.

Shop Clean. Whenever you can, try to find organic, clean foods. I know in some areas like mine, it can be hard to find organic options. And they can also be more expensive. Choosing snacks and foods that are free from potentially harmful ingredients is definitely a plus when considering the well-being of your family.

Prepare your snacks at home. Preparation is vital when trying to live healthier. To prevent getting those salty chips out of the snack machine at work or stopping at the local store to grab that honey bun, prepare healthy snacks at home.  You can make trail mix, cut up vegetables, or whole grain crackers with peanut butter (yum!). Having snacks with you will make it easier for you not to indulge in easy access sugary snacks.

Make snacking fun. Pairing snack time with a fun activity can actually help your family make the transition easier! My kiddos enjoy watching Netflix, doing puzzles, and baking. So instead of buttered popcorn during Netflix binges, replace it with a healthier version or will a different healthy snack. Instead of baking those fudge brownies or lemon cake, bake healthy muffins or cookies. Make it a fun activity for everyone.

These are great tips! Also, how have I never heard of SnackNation? It sounds awesome! It took me quite a long time to really understand labels on the food I bought but now it is much easier to see the things I should be avoiding for healthier kids and a healthier family in general.

I lucked out, my kids will eat anything you put in front of them like your kid you mentioned. We buy all natural and organic all the time because my youngest has food allergies, and corn is one of those. You can’t find anything hardly without corn syrup! It’s the devil, lol

  15. Carolyn November 30, 2016 at 3:37 pm - Reply

THis box sounds fun and would help my kids want to try new snacks that are good for them. We are snackers and it would be good to make a few snacks more of the healthy kind.

Since I changed up my eating to more plant-based, whole foods, my quest for healthy snacks is never ending. I want things that taste good and are good for you, not always easy to find. Can’t wait to give this subscription service a try.

Definitely hard Blythe! I hope you enjoy!

I think it is important to include as many fresh fruits and vegetables in my kids’ snacks. It is not always easy to do so but so worth it in the long-run when it comes to their health.

  18. Stephanie November 30, 2016 at 5:08 pm - Reply

There are a ton of snacks in that box! Wow! Making healthy food decisions is a priority for us, especially now that we have a baby. I really want to set the best example.

We love to eat healthier snacks around our house. Vegetables and fruits are our go-to’s, but we are not above trying kale or plantain chips either.
