What an amazing adventure! Memphis proved to be a great city full of great music, rich culture, and delicious food! Emphasis on the delicious food was definitely intentional.
Our trip included a trip to the Nat’l Civil Rights museum (which I have detailed in the previous post), the Memphis Zoo, and Beale Street! It started to rain the day we decided to walk to Beale St so that was cut short. I’m not much for walking in the rain without a coat or umbrella. But you can hear the sounds of blues and jazz from some of the bars that we walked by, lots of people just enjoying each other’s company, and you are able to get a glimpse into what it was like to walk Beale St. back in the 50’s and 60’s.
We ate at quite a few places but there were two that were my favorite:
Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken
I unfortunately did not snap a photo of my plate because by the time our food arrived I was famished and the last thought on my mind was food. But the chicken was amazing! And I haven’t had fried chicken in months, but it this meal was well worth the calories. I also ordered an apple turnover with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top that the kids and I shared. And all I can say is delicious.
I was a bit biased going into this place because I love Carolina turkey BBQ and BBQ’d chicken. Although I was born in Virginia, Carolina has adopted me. All that bias went out the window. I did manage to snap a photo this time. I ordered the BBQ’d chicken plate with beans and mac n’ cheese. Delicious! The chicken was big, I only ate half of it. The beans had this amazing smoked flavor, omg. So good! I ended up ordering from here again the next day! Haha! I got turkey bbq and double mac n’ cheese! Yummy!!
I will have to double up on my workouts this week for sure! But it was well worth it!
I had to work from the hotel room all day Thursday but the kids were able to go and enjoy the Memphis zoo without me 🙁 But it was memorable for them and I am told that the Memphis zoo is one of the top in the country. Looking forward to getting those photos to share with you all soon!
Overall, this was a well spent trip with a mixture of fun and education. Oh, and food! Had to throw that in there.
I definitely want to go again when I don’t have to work so that we can tour Graceland and some more fun places that we didn’t get to see.
Have any of you been to Memphis? If so, what was your favorite thing to do?
